Porhov
Porkhov fortress was founded by Alexander Nevsky in 1239 (today it is the old Porkhov hillfort). In 1346, the fortress was destroyed during the siege by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Olgerd. In 1387, in another place on the banks of the river Shelon' was founded a new, stone fortress Porkhov. It is one of the oldest surviving monuments of Russian fortification architecture today. In 1428, the fortress withstood the siege by the troops of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vitovt. After the including of the Novgorod (1478) and Pskov (1510) lands to the Russian state, Porkhov found himself on the border, but in the inner - Novgorod and Pskov districts. The last time he played a border role was in 1581, when he turned out to be the westernmost point to which the troops of Stephen Batory reached during the conquest of the Pskov land. Porkhov was not taken.
