The castle was built in 1477-1479 by the Bishop of Revel Simon von der Borch. Among the famous owners was the bishop of Revel, Johann Blankenfeld (1514-1524). In January 1558 it was besieged and burned. During the Livonian War, it defested attacks by the Russians, Danes and Swedes. As a result, he went into the possession of the Swedish kingdom. Today, a gate tower and underground structures have survived from the castle.
