Three merchants from Revel decided to found a monastery of the Order of St. Brigitte near Revel. In 1407 monks arrived from the Germanic lands in Revel, the monastery was built in 1417-1436. It was considered the largest closter in Livonia. In 1575, the monastery was destroyed by Russian troops and has not been restored since then. During the Soviet era, the ruins were restored, and an open-air museum was created. In 2001, next to the ruins, a functioning monastery of St. Brigitte was open.
