Ass (Kiltsi)

The castle has been known since 1466 as the castle of a vassal of the Livonian Order. In the Middle Ages, it was called Gilsenhof. In the 16th century it was called Ass.  One of the local battles of the Livonian War took place near the castle walls in1558, when the nobleman Robert von Gilsen organized a detachment of local nobles and peasants, was besieged in the castle and died. In 1790, the new owner of the estate, Hermann Johann von Beckendorff, rebuilt the medieval ruins into a classicist manor house. The ancient walls are hidden in the building. In particular, one of the stylized towers is based on a medieval tower. Today the monument is called Kiltsi Manor. It is famous for the fact that the famous traveler-navigator, the owner of the estate, Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern, died here in 1846.
