The castle was founded in 1272 and was rebuilt in the XIV-XV centuries. In the battles of summer - autumn 1558, he was burned, captured, repaired and under the name Polchev remained among the Russian possessions in Livonia until 1570, when he was transferred to the Danish Duke Magnus and made the capital of his vassal "Livonian Kingdom". The ruins of the castle is located in the Estonian town of Põltsamaa today.
