Valdia, hillfort. Saaremaa

Valdia was one of the largest Estonian settlements in Saaremaa. The knights besieged it in 1206, but took it only in 1227. The fall of this fortress marked the conquest of the entire island. The rampart of the ring fortress, earthen with a stone backfill, reached a height of 7 m, the area of the settlement was about 3.6 thousand m2. The hillfort is located near the village of Valjala today.
