Around 1227-1230 the crusaders founded a castle at Pöide. In 1230 a chapel was built as part of a fortified castle. At the end of the 13th century the chapel was rebuilt as a fortified church. The temple was badly damaged during the days of the large-scale pagan uprising of the Estonians in 1343, when it was at its epicenter. Today, nothing is left of the castle, the church stands as an independent structure and amazes with its monumental forms of the fortified church.
