The Riga Dome Cathedral was founded in 1211 by order of Bishop Albert Buxgewden. The construction was completed by 1270. The Cathedral was the main temple of the Riga Archdiocese, and the Riga Archdiocese was considered the oldest in Livonia. In the 16th century the cathedral was destroyed: in 1524 it was destroyed by Protestants, and in 1547 there was a big city fire in Riga, which damaged the cathedral. The temple was rebuilt. In the church was located the grave of St. Maynard, the first bishop of Livonia (d. 1196).
