The castle was founded in the late 13th - early 14th centuries to protect the southern borders of the Dorpat bishopric. It was first mentioned in 1322. At first it was a fortified manor house, then it was rebuilt into a castle of the castel type 42 by 45 meters . In 1500 the castle was rebuilt, a round tower was added. In 1558, at the beginning of the Livonian War, the castle was taken and destroyed by Russian troops. Today, we can see the ruins only, because the stone was taken for the construction of the nearby town of Võru.
