Ahrensburg Castle was founded by the crusaders after the suppression of the famous St. George's Night uprising in 1343-1345. Presumably, the construction was completed in 1400. The castle served as the seat of the Bishop of Ösel. After 1560 it was owned by Duke of Denmark Magnus. It was not damaged during the Livonian war and was not subjected to gunfire or attacks and for this reason has retained its exterior and interiors to the most authentic extent. It can serve as an example of the image of medieval Livonia. In the late 16th century, it was enhanced with outside ramparts. The castle is situated in modern Kuressaare on the western shore of Saaremaa (Ösel) island.
